Purpose:

In the world of storytelling, sensitivity reading, once simply labeled as subject expertise in specific fields or consulting, steps in as a valuable ally for authors. When crafting characters from diverse backgrounds, authors often called on subject experts or consultants—now known as sensitivity readers or, in my preference, diversity consultants or diversity editors. This dynamic role ensures that unintended biases and stereotypes are addressed.

Our Process:

1. Initial Consultation: Engage with writers via email to understand specific concerns about their manuscript.
2. Manuscript Reading: Thorough reading to ensure sensitivity and accuracy.
3. Assessment Delivery: Provide an assessment document detailing areas of concern and potential improvements.

What To Expect:

• Sensitivity reading doesn't encompass proofreading, developmental editing, line editing, or checks for spelling, grammar, and tense.
• Sensitivity readers are not replacements for research. Dedicated researchers and fact-checkers invest significant time into in-depth research and are essential members of an editorial team.
